Hunting for Retro and Vintage Gifts in London – by Alice Davises

London’s vintage and retro treasures are one of my favorite things about the city. London is the perfect place to find a unique gift for an occasion, a nostalgic present for Christmas, or something more meaningful than a standard high-end set.

Vintage markets are one of my favourite weekends rituals. Portobello Road always tops my list, not just for its colourful chaos but also for the variety of items available. You can find everything from mid-century kitchenware and enamel kitchen tins to vinyl records that still jangle with life. I’m not sure how many occasions when I’ve received “just one small gift” that turned into a complete bag of treasures.

For something that is more carefully curated, I typically head to Shoreditch and Islington. There are vintage boutiques in these neighborhoods that specialize in specific eras. For instance there’s a store that specializes on 1940s fashion and another that focuses on lighting from the 1970s. You can spend an entire hour talking to the owner about the history of the lamp or the leather bag.

I always verify authenticity when buying retro-themed gifts. A maker’s mark, original labels, or even a bit of wear and tear can add to the character. London’s antique dealers and stallholders are generally eager to share the story behind a item, and that story is often incorporated into the present. Imagine giving a scarf from the 1950s that travelled through Europe or a typewriter that was used to write love letters in years past. This turns a gift into a living part of history.

Of course, a large part of the fun is mixing the old with the contemporary. I often combine a vintage home item with modern packaging or a fresh bouquet of blooms to give it a contemporary twist. It’s a great way to give something old a new appearance while respecting its origins.

London has a range of fairs that are seasonal. These are especially popular during Christmas. For me, London is the perfect backdrop for that hunt — a city that embraces its past, but is alive and vibrant.
