Moving into a student flat ain’t glamorous. The windows rattled in the wind, unusual sofas but we dragged in whatever we could find. IKEA lasts a term at best, so we hunted retro. I spotted a funky armchair on Brick Lane. It looked like chaos, but that’s what made it home. Funky retro seating has character, and students get that instinctively. I’ve watched half my flat pass out across two chairs, and the unusual sofa was another character in the story. East London is built on mix and mess, and designers take inspiration from it.
We wandered past Smithers one Saturday, accent chairs antique and the accent chairs were bold and weird. We couldn’t afford much, but it’s become the throne of the house. Ask around and you’ll hear it. It’s part of student life. Accent chairs don’t flinch when four people pile on. Modern stuff? Forget it, but retro lasts. every wobble tells the truth. When you’re moving out, you don’t remember the kettle, but the mismatched set still makes you laugh. So if you’re moving to London, don’t waste time on the soulless new.
Take home something with scars, and watch it age with you.
